This wool coat was inspired by elements of nature including flowers, animals, and minerals. It was designed to be a representation of the definitions associated with the word “serpentine”. This word has three different meanings: winding and twisting like a serpent; resembling a serpent; and a dark green mineral sometimes mottled or spotted like snake skin.
The design of this coat incorporates curvilinear seams and flaps to replicate the organic curves found in nature. These curves are also meant to symbolize the winding form that serpents use to move. The transforming collar design used for the coat involves a notched collar that converts into a shawl collar. This design feature depicts the curvature and opening of flowers, specifically calla lilies. The inner lining of the coat and the underside of the flaps are designed using a dark green kasha lining which imitates the colour of serpents and serpentine minerals.
